Used EV buying guide
Buying a used EV in Australia: the essential checklist
A used EV can offer strong value, but the buying checklist is different from simply checking kilometres and service history. Battery condition, remaining warranty, charging compatibility, software, accident history and insurance cost all deserve attention before money changes hands.
Battery
Start with battery health, but do not reduce it to one number
Battery capacity gradually changes with age and use. Ask what battery-health information the vehicle can provide, whether a manufacturer or qualified diagnostic assessment is available, and how the observed range compares with the model, age, conditions and specification.
Also inspect the battery warranty. Check its original term, kilometre limit, capacity threshold where applicable, exclusions and whether it transfers to a subsequent owner.
- Battery health or diagnostic information
- Remaining battery and vehicle warranty
- Current displayed and real-world range
- Charging history where genuinely available
- Warning messages or unresolved faults
History
Check the vehicle's identity, finance and repair history
As with any used car, verify the vehicle identity and conduct the appropriate Australian used-vehicle and security-interest checks before purchase. Ask about collisions, flood exposure, significant underbody damage, repairs and recalls.
For an EV, pay particular attention to previous work around the battery enclosure, charge port, high-voltage components and structural areas. A clean-looking exterior does not replace a proper inspection and history check.
Charging
Confirm that the EV works with the charging you will actually use
Check the vehicle's AC and DC charging capability, connector type, maximum charge rates and any adapters or cables included with the sale. Then compare those capabilities with home charging and the public networks relevant to your driving.
Older EVs can have different charging standards or lower maximum charging speeds than newer models. That may be perfectly adequate, but it should be understood before purchase rather than discovered on a road trip.
Costs
Calculate ownership cost before deciding the used EV is cheap
Purchase price is only one part of the decision. Price insurance for the exact model and variant, understand tyre requirements, investigate likely servicing, consider home-charging installation if needed and check the cost and availability of model-specific parts.
If finance is involved, compare the total amount payable and the loan terms rather than focusing only on the advertised repayment. EVITAL's content is general information and should not be treated as personal financial advice.
Test and inspect
Use the test drive to check the EV systems as well as the car
Check that the vehicle charges correctly, review dashboard warnings, test climate control and major electronic functions, listen for suspension or tyre issues and confirm that supplied keys, cables and accessories are present. For a material purchase, consider an independent inspection appropriate to the vehicle.
- Charge the vehicle if practical
- Check warning lights and diagnostics
- Test driver-assistance and infotainment functions safely
- Inspect tyres for wear and specification
- Check underbody for obvious impact damage
- Confirm cables, keys and included equipment
- Obtain an insurance quote before committing
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a used EV with battery degradation?
Some degradation is expected as batteries age. The important question is whether the remaining usable capacity, condition, warranty and real-world range suit your needs and are reflected in the price.
Should I get insurance quotes before buying a used EV?
Yes. Insurance pricing can vary materially by model, driver and insurer, so obtaining quotes before purchase helps you understand the real ownership cost.
Does the EV battery warranty transfer to a second owner?
That depends on the manufacturer and warranty terms. Check the warranty for the specific vehicle rather than assuming it transfers automatically.
