EV maintenance in Australia: what electric cars still need serviced

Electric vehicles remove many petrol-engine service items, but they are not maintenance-free. Brakes, tyres, suspension, battery thermal management, cabin filters, wipers, software and charging equipment still need attention, and the manufacturer's schedule remains the starting point for each model.

Service schedule

Use the manufacturer's interval rather than a generic EV rule

Australian Government guidance says EVs generally need less maintenance because they have fewer moving parts, and many are professionally serviced or inspected around annually. The actual interval and required work are determined by the vehicle manufacturer.

Keep service records, software campaign information and recall work organised. That history can support warranty discussions and can be useful when the vehicle is later sold.

Brakes

Vehicles that use friction brakes less frequently can also benefit from checking that components remain clean and operate correctly. Follow the service guidance for the exact model rather than waiting for braking performance to deteriorate.

Tyres and suspension

Tyres deserve more attention than many new EV owners expect

Tyre pressure, alignment, rotation requirements and tread condition affect efficiency, range, braking and tyre life. EV weight and torque can make poor alignment or aggressive acceleration expensive if tyre wear accelerates.

Suspension components still work like suspension components on any other car and need inspection. Unusual tyre wear, vibration or steering behaviour should be investigated rather than treated as a normal EV characteristic.

Battery and cooling

Battery care is mostly about following the vehicle's own guidance

Modern EVs manage battery temperature and charging through onboard systems. Owners should keep the vehicle software current, respond to warning messages and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for everyday charging and long-term storage.

Battery cooling or thermal-management systems can require periodic inspection. Do not open or work on high-voltage battery systems yourself unless you are appropriately qualified and authorised to do so.

Home charging

The charger is part of the ownership system too

Inspect charging cables and plugs for obvious damage and stop using equipment with loose connections, exposed conductors or other signs of deterioration. Keep charging equipment clean, dry and used as intended.

Australian Government guidance recommends having a home EV charger inspected by a licensed electrician periodically. Electrical installation work should be performed by appropriately licensed professionals.

Insurance and repairs

Maintenance and insured damage are different questions

Routine servicing, wear and maintenance are generally different from sudden insured damage. If a warning light, battery fault or mechanical issue appears without an accident or other insured event, check the vehicle warranty, service process and policy exclusions before assuming it is an insurance claim.

After a collision or significant underbody impact, however, assessment may need to consider high-voltage components even when the vehicle still appears driveable.
