EV range explained: what changes real-world driving range in Australia?

The range number used to advertise an EV is a standardised test result, not a promise that every driver will travel exactly that distance. Real-world range changes with speed, temperature, elevation, wind, rain, tyres, load, towing and how the vehicle is driven.

An EV's trip computer estimates remaining range from battery energy and expected consumption. That estimate becomes more useful when you understand your vehicle's typical kWh per 100 km in city, motorway and mixed driving.

For a trip, combine the vehicle's navigation estimate with the distance to the next charger and a sensible reserve. The further you travel from dense charging coverage, the more valuable that reserve becomes.
