Australian EV insurance guide
How EV insurance works in Australia
There is no separate legal category of motor insurance called ‘EV insurance’. Australian electric vehicles use the same broad motor-insurance framework as other cars, but battery systems, charging equipment, repair requirements and vehicle technology create additional questions worth asking when you compare policies.
The basics
Know which type of motor insurance you are buying
Australian Government Moneysmart identifies compulsory third party, third party property damage, third party property damage with fire and theft, and comprehensive motor insurance. They protect against different risks.
CTP relates to injury to people and does not insure your EV against collision damage. Comprehensive insurance generally provides the broadest vehicle-damage protection, but it still has conditions and exclusions. Read the policy documents for the product you are considering.
- CTP: injury liability framework, with state and territory differences
- Third party property: damage to other people's vehicles or property
- Third party fire and theft: adds specified protection for your vehicle
- Comprehensive: broader protection for your vehicle and third-party property, subject to terms
EV questions
Ask what the policy says about the parts that make an EV different
Do not assume an insurer's marketing label answers every EV question. Look at the actual policy wording and ask about high-voltage battery damage, charging cables, portable accessories, home charging equipment, towing, repair arrangements, glass and sensor calibration where these matter to you.
Home charging equipment may sit outside the motor policy depending on the product and installation. Check both motor and relevant home insurance documentation rather than assuming one policy covers everything.
Value
Understand what happens if the EV is a total loss
Depending on the product, comprehensive cover may use agreed value or market value. Moneysmart describes agreed value as a fixed amount agreed with the insurer and market value as the amount the vehicle would have sold for at the time of the loss, determined by the insurer using relevant information.
This can be particularly important when EV new-car pricing and used values move quickly. Compare the valuation basis alongside the premium and excess.
Comparison
A useful EV insurance comparison is more than a quote table
Compare like with like: the same vehicle and drivers, similar usage, the same valuation basis where possible, excesses, exclusions and benefits. Comparison websites may receive payment from participating insurers and may not compare the whole market, so understand the scope of any comparison you use.
EVITAL provides general information and an enquiry pathway. It should not tell a customer that a particular financial product is right for their personal objectives, financial situation or needs unless the appropriate regulated advice framework is in place.
Before purchase
Get the insurance number before you buy the car
An EV's purchase price can look attractive while its insurance result for a particular driver is not. Obtain quotes for the exact model and variant before committing to a new or used EV and include the premium and likely excess in your ownership budget.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is EV insurance a special type of insurance?
Not as a separate statutory category of motor cover. EVs are insured through motor-insurance products, although insurers may market EV-specific features or products.
Does CTP cover damage to my electric car?
No. CTP relates to injuries to people. It does not cover collision damage to your EV or other vehicles or property.
Does comprehensive insurance cover everything on an EV?
No. Comprehensive insurance is broad but remains subject to the insured events, definitions, exclusions, limits, excesses and conditions of the specific policy.
